THE HIEROS GAMOS (“HOLY MARRIAGE”)

The descent of the psyche into a state of dichotomy (the tree of knowledge of good and evil) stems from a fall in the cosmic feminine principle of Sophia (divine wisdom). Analogous to the kundalini, she represents the feminine aspect of the Divine. She is the fiery and dynamic force that birthed the cosmos and she rests as the creative urge deep within us. Tantra seeks to liberate this untapped potential in the body in order to facilitate our path back to nonduality, a state of pure consciousness.

Our inherently nondual nature is symbolised in various esoteric traditions by the ritual union between a God and Goddess. It represents the need to marry our human and spiritual nature, so that we can return to a state of oneness. This pursuit of spiritual androgyny is a symbol of spiritual alchemy known as the Hieros Gamos (“holy marriage”). This represents the marriage of divine feminine and masculine polarities within:

·         Logos (reason) and Sophia (wisdom)

·         Conscious and unconscious

·         Left and right brain

When one has achieved an inner marriage, they can recreate the God and Goddess principle within a relationship. This practice teaches couples how to honour the divinity in one another and achieve a sacred union of energies. This allows both parties to build telepathic attunement and operate in cosmic synchronicity.
